Country’s first Online CoronaThon-19 kicks off at Daffodil International University
3-day long (May 02-04) CoronaThon-19 which is a “Hackathon on Combating the Coronavirus” in online platform began today on May 02, 2020. Honorable Minister Mustafa Jabbar, Posts Telecommunications Division of Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and IT inaugurated the CoronaThon-19 as the chief guest. Prof. Dr. S M Mahabub Ul Haque Majumder, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University presided over the program. The program was also addressed among others by Mr. Mohammad Nuruzzaman, Chief Executive Officer, Daffodil Family, Dr. Sheikh Md. All year, Convwener, Coronathon-19, and Head of the Department of Multimedia and Creative Technology and Mr. K M Hassan Ripon, Executive Director, Bangladesh Skill Development Institute (BSDI). 20 teams from India, Pakistan, China, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Taiwan, and South Korea along with 100 teams from Host Bangladeshi Universities and colleges are participating in this Hackathon.
While addressing as the chief guest Mr. Mustafa Jabber said that the corona crisis is a new experience for us. Most of the countries of the world have been a lockdown at a time which never happened earlier. But, humanity has unlimited potentials and that’s why they come out from the ancient society to this modern world through utilizing their merit and technology. He hoped that Today’s corona crisis will also be solved by this meritorious human being. In the meantime, Mustafa Jabber thanked Daffodil International University for proof of its ICT strength once again through arranging this “CoronaThon-19”.
Mr. Mustafa Jabber also said towards the participants that it is not expectable for me that all of you would be able to invent vaccines or medicine for coronavirus, but it’s a great introduction with technology for you that how to find out a solution for a big challenge through technology. More crises and epidemics like corona will come to the world in the future and the young generation will solve those crises through their brain and technology. He added.
Prof. Dr. S M Mahabub Ul Haque Majumder said that till now, we don’t know what is the solution of the corona. The whole world is working on it. We are trying to make a platform to involve our potential young students to find out the solution to the corona problem. A lot of young students from 12 countries of the globe already submitted their ideas through this platform which is remarkable and he hopes that a good number of effective solutions may become out through this young generation he added.
To identify solutions of innumerable problems created by the COVID-19 pandemic and to develop the solutions to address the most urgent health, food & nutrition, social and financial problems caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, Daffodil International University organized this CoronaThon-19, where different technology-based solutions have been submitted from the students all over the world to solve the challenges brought on by the current pandemic. Daffodil International University will provide financial support up to $25,000 (BDT 20,00,000+) to implement the idea and its well-equipped ‘Innovation Lab’ for the research activities of the best solution providers.
This Hackathon will help the students to think outside of the box towards the real challenges. Students from Grade 10 to Post Graduation level from all around the world are participating in this competition in junior and senior categories either individually or as a team comprising a maximum of 3 members. Selected solutions/tools will be checked, rechecked, modified, and implemented with the guidance of experts from Daffodil International University and all around the world. The competition comes in as a gift; it may not be able to produce a vaccine but it can make life possible again.
